Purpose
This CNE conference provides MS nurse specialists, and other clinicians dedicated to MS patient care, with clinical and research updates to expand their roles in multidisciplinary teams and improve patient outcomes. Leading experts will offer information and insights on meeting the challenges undertaken by clinicians, educators, and advocates for their patients.
Responsibilities of the MS nurse specialist and other clinicians have become increasingly complex as the armamentarium of MS treatment has expanded. Nurses need to weigh therapeutic options in the context of disease course and lifestyle considerations, while assessing symptoms, monitoring adverse events, and overcoming barriers to adherence. It is the MS nurse who educates patients and families, often serving as an advocate in resolving issues that patients confront in the workplace and in social settings, as well as with insurance companies, healthcare services, and government agencies. In recognizing all the clinical and non-clinical nursing responsibilities, this CNE conference offers valuable updates and strategies intended to support and strengthen the foundation of MS patient care.
Learning Objectives
After completing this CNE activity, the learner will be able to:
- Identify current and emerging MS therapies and their role in treatment, including efficacy, tolerability and safety profiles
- Discuss updated guideline on DMTs, newly approved agents, as well as availability of longer-acting formulations that help increase treatment adherence, improve patient tolerance, and clinical outcomes
- Recognize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of MS
- Describe nursing assessment and management of MS symptoms (i.e., pain, spasticity, fatigue, depression, bladder overactivity) and comorbidities to improve patient quality-of-life
- Assess barriers to adherence that the patient may confront throughout the disease course and implement strategies and formulations to help improve adherence to therapy
